A decently early start was achieved for a change. We got to the wooden pier in time to see old friend Santa Claus Bob who has a big nice white beard. He is retired from it now but he spent years being a Santa at Christmas for benevolent groups around the area. We had a great visit and the OFM got caught up on a lot of the local news from while we were gone this year. We finally parted company and the OFM headed to the fishing areas.
The bulkhead protecting the Allego Channel was our destination. Nothing was being caught until the OFM felt a bump on his lure and set the hook. Then the unknown critter set off to swimming and the reel drag got maxed out. Whatever it was just kept on swimming away and the reel was reluctantly letting line out. As the reel was getting very low on line the critter stopped. We pumped it toward us and the critter would just swim away for a little ways.
Apparently we finally got it worn down some and we started pumping the rod to gain some line back on the reel. We had a serious contest for several minutes. When we finally got the critter near the bulkhead we could see what it was.
It was a sting ray about 18 to 20 inches wide. It had put up a great fight. Now it was time to release the critter. As the OFM tried to get close to the edge of the bulkhead he was getting worried about falling in with the ray. Then just as he reached for the line the knot at the lure gave up POW. And the ray went on its way. And the OFM did not fall in.
Back at Sierra the OFM decided he was tired and ready to leave. Before we got out of the park my old friend Don showed up riding a bike. We ended up visiting for a good while. Then it was time for Don to start back to his RV. The OFM waved bye as Don rode his trusty steed to home.
It was a great day with lots of activities accomplished from trying to have tooooo much fun.
