Shingles Disease

Adventure Location: Decatur, Al.

The OFM is a prime candidate for shingles illness due to his childhood chicken pox sickness. About two months ago he learned about a shingles vaccination to moderate if not stop a case of shingles from occurring. After careful reading, he decided to get vaccinated against shingles.

Here is the part this blog entry is about. Supposedly the vaccination is two shots two months apart. The first one put the OFM down for almost two full days. He could get up and take care of an emergency and fix his meals but it was not fun.

Today we had shot number two about 0930 and asked about the second shot reactions. Answer was maybe a little or none at all. WELL LET ME TELL YOU, by 1000 the OFM was reacting and to bed he went. The reaction was about 80% as bad as the first time. He got up to go to get lunch and back to bed. But about 1700 he suddenly got a whole lot better and as this is being entered at 1930 he is recovered. So the second go around was fairly intense but only lasted a few hours. That was wonderful.

Now we can concentrate on trying to have tooooo much fun tomorrow.

  1. Glad to read that you did not have the severe Reactions that Kathy went through. Our Family Doctor deemed her allergic and would not give her the second.
Glad you are back up having tooooo much fun.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  2. Whew! Glad the second one was less intense. I had the old original some years ago, and my GP, I guess they're called something else now, like family doctor, or something, sort of discouraged me when the newest one came out, saying she wasn't sure about it. I'd been having what I guess could be called "breakthrough" episodes, but mild enough, and was curious about getting rid of those. Anyway, I've gotten rid of them, with 1000 mg of lysine a day. I didn't believe it would work; an old nurse friend told me. Two years now, and no shingles. Of course, that's just anecdotal evidence, which doesn't count for much scientifically. But my GP said it won't hurt.
Have you ever had shingles? Not nice. Hope this vax does a good job. I suspect it will....

  3. I only remember getting one shot for shingles several years ago from the VA. Didn't have any side effects other than a little ache where I got the shot.

  4. Several years ago Old Man and I got the single shot. I thought it was expensive, and insurance wouldn't pay, but because I had heard of several people who really suffered with Shingles, we went ahead and got the shot. Phew! No worries now. We thought!!!! Then,a few years later we are told that the shot we got isn't very good------WHAT?! Now there was a different answer. A better one, but two shots, and even more expensive. We have not gotten that. After reading this, and your commenter's response, I don't think we will get it. Old Man, at 88, has enough health issues without adding more. I can hope the first shot will help some, I am glad you feel better.

  5. Thanks for that update. We need to get the vaccine but now I know we shouldn't both do it the same day so we can take care of one another if we have bad reactions.

  6. I got my first shingles shot on Monday. I escaped with just a sore arm for a couple of days. My dad had a bad case of shingles at 60 so it was time.
