MAJOR NEW CHANGE

MADISON, ALABAMA

6/22/25

DISCUSSIONS with my son about my age and driving led to him asking me to quit driving.  I had already made this trip here my last towing trip and had been thinking about motel style travel in a vehicle.  Research on the internet led the OFM to places to check my self for decent driving. The OFM failed in several categories. So tonight it seems appropriate for me to quit driving public roads now at 78.75 years old. So once again my motto on the top of the blog first page

DON'T WAIT  DO IT NOW  seems very appropriate .

I still will see if I can scratch out a blog without the travel of all the previous editions. Good Night

  1. Very appropriate...
Keep in mind that not driving just means that, there are other ways to travel if it's what you want to do. There are fish to be caught most anywhere you are, there are coffee shops & diners all over the place where there will be old guys looking for someone to talk to. Most every town has a VFW or AL and most towns have buses that will take you there.
There are still things to "Don't wait Do it now" about, they are just a little different than what they were... Have faith...

  2. Maybe consider Amtrak. Take a train trip with a sleeper in your room. See lots of country and leave the driving to the train engineers. I've the food is great. Meet a lot of people too. Something to think about. The nearest Amtrak station to you would probably be Birmingham.

  3. Barney. I KNOW how hard it is to give up driving. But your son has your best interest at heart. I think the worst part is the loss of independence. None of us like that! The challenge is to find a way around that obstacle. The idea about going by train is great if you have ways to get to stations. Just, please, don't leave us by the side of the road wondering how you are. Take us ----your friends!-----with you wherever your journey leads. We have come a long way together and we know you well. Meanwhile, there are still physical issues to heal, right?

  4. I'm sure your son has your back, wanting to "ward" off any future accidents;o)
Sure not what you want to hear, but the love behind the message is clear.
Sending another BIG hug to you, OFM! Keep in touch.

  6. Growing old is better than the alternative but oh my, the changes it brings. Glad you are close to family now. I'll be 78 this year and am surprised at how quickly things are going downhill in some areas. Froggi Donna

  7. Wow, Darlene. What a wonderful comment. You said it all SO WELL! My experiences with Barney are the same. Will always think of him with his "stoup"! And his sense of humor that so often makes us smile. Thank you for telling him so clearly.
