Datil, NM Store and Cafe

Adventure Location: Datil, New Mexico
Teams Location:  Datil Well Recreation Area, New Mexico

The OFM is a dummy.  He should have known something was up.  When SightSeer was put into the back of the Truck yesterday, it was caught whispering with the Truck.  Apparently while the OFM slept the trio made some plans to surprise me with.  As John was told when we said our goodbyes last evening, the Teams were heading down in elevation to Texas.
But this morning when the Teams got to the highway the dang Truck would not turn left.  Suddenly we were headed north.  Long ago the OFM learned that when the rest of the Teams make up their minds you might as well go along with them. So far it has been a very good deal.  We went north to Socorro and turned west into the mountains.  Lunch was at a pull off with a fair view.

Then we gently at 55 mph made our way to the little town of Datil and the Datil Well Recreation Area at over 7000 feet elevation. Naturally the Ofm has to move very slow and rest a lot but he is enjoying the forest, mountains and high temp today of 83 for almost an hour.
Datil is a neat very small town.  There is one main building with a really neat store, café and gas/diesel at the cheapest price seen in NM yet.  The store even has Wi-Fi which is good since the campground has no Wi-Fi or air card access.

The store surprised me by being fairly complete.  A person should be able to find anything they need to eat well in the store.  They even have a fresh meat counter and do their own butchering.

The shelves are loaded well with things you might want. Notice the snake skin over the shelves in this next picture.

The sign says it was a rattlesnake but a little birdy told me it was actually from a python.

The café next door was very clean and nice.  The menu was not high priced to my surprise.  They are open from 0700 to 2100.  Tonight their chili cheese burger will get a tasting if the OFM is lucky

Now here is the most important part.  This is Brandy. She let me in on all the important information about the area.  A very pleasant lady who was friendly and helpful and efficient all at once.

When you go to Datil, hope that Brandy is there to assist you because the experience will be very nice.

There are lots of pictures yet to process of the campground.  Tomorrow will be even more pictures taken of the area as the OFM Teams meander around the forest and meadows trying to have tooooo much fun. TheOFM.

  1. Love those pictures. I thinks it's fun to see pictures inside stores and the people that work there. That meat looks really good. I wonder how much they sell hamburger for? And I don't care if that snake is a rattler or a python - I wouldn't want to meet either one while it was still living!!

  6. I have known about Datil Well for years but the coverage on the internet and in books has been sorely lacking. This is proving to be a fantastic area for a fool like me.

  7. Normally places like that charge confiscatory gasoline prices with the excuse that "they have to have it trucked in." But the Datil store charged normal (Socorro) prices when I last went through. I filled up at the pumps and the restaurant.

  8. Looks like an interesting place to stop and absorb the atmostphere. Love little places like that, instead of a big busy truck stop.

    Howdy Barney,

Joyce has a book about one f the first people to live out beyond Datil, back in the 1800s when they rode horseback 50 miles to get the mail at Datil!! It's quite a story!! Tell us all about it!!
That's one of the smaller snakes of the region!!

  10. They had some beautiful steaks in case. We thought we'll buy one tomorrow. Only we forgot that tomorrow was sunday and there was no one there to cut them- bought some delicious hamburger instead and made a charcoal fire for fun and flavor.
