A trip to the grocery in Galveston gave me an opportunity to review the damage from IKE. Most of the places that wanted to be repaired are repaired. The seawall road is in full swing and crowded.
Coming north on the coast road there are many instances of damaged houses still in need of repair.
In several places the small dunes that were helping fight storms are now gone completely.
One structure on concrete pilings is gone. What was there???
Lots of new houses and condos and etc are being built very quickly. Here is a shot of s few of them.
One of my favorite fishing piers was wiped out. Here is what is left of it.
The hordes of folks in Galveston make it a place not on my must return list. It is a nice enough area but way too crowded for me and the Team.
Back in Freeport my sis and hubby took me over to get some shrimp and fish for meals. The shrimp were prepared to perfection as usual by my sister. The fresh red snapper we purchased came out better than fantastic. Now what makes this especially remarkable is that the electric power for the whole island kept cutting off for long periods of time. The house my sis and BIL had rented has electric stove, so my sis had to deal with the intermittent functioning of the stove during her superior cooking of the food. It is not cool enough down here to do without the A/C and the humidity. So we were always glad when the power cam back on.
But even the power failures could not stop us from trying to have tooooo much fun. TheOFM.
You are getting closer to my home, here in Cut-N-Shoot. My wife and I (and of course the dogs) used to go to Galveston State Park in the winter when they had special monthly rates. I just posted on my blog a happening on one of these trips that you may find interesting. Here is a link to my blog: http://www.dizzydick.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteHave a good day and stay out of the rain that is expected.
I heard about and received pictures of that snowfall all the way up in Washington state where I was working at the time.
ReplyDeleteJust cureous, since you were a "Former Nuclear Containment Designer" I did a three and half year project with G.E. at their fuel and components plant in Wilming, N.C.. Have you ever been to that plant? Since it is only the fuel rods that they make (also jet engines), you probably were not there. Most people don't know how flamable small shavings of Zircaloy can be. (The material used in rods and channels). I used to cary a small can of it's shaving hunting with me for an emergency fire starter.
ReplyDeleteThe only nuclear place I have worked is the Hanford site in Washington.
