Flour Bluff, Texas
You want to know a great place to have fun. Go to any National Park and immerse yourself into whatever is the reason for it being in existence. Some idle thoughts today during the dreary wet cold weather here brought up the idea of remembering all the National Parks of my travels. Then it would be a plan to visit the rest of them. That could take a long time.
To sort of quote Lloyd of Wandrin, you cannot see it all in only one lifetime. WOW what an understatement that is. Just the NPS parks would take years. Then you can start on the state or other government parks. For instance, in the last forty years my feet have tread in Big Bend as often as they could get there. The count is over twenty trips and in Jan of 2010 the plan is to go back there. That one park could take a year all by itself. Also adjacent to Big Bend is Black Gap Wildlife Management Area which is very interesting and remote. On the other side is the Texas Big Bend Ranch State Park. It could take another year. Just up the road is Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area ( 2 days) run by Texas. Head north about eighty miles and you hit Fort Davis National Historic Park(2 days) and the Texas Davis Mountains State Park (7 days).
Now you run on up the highway 80 or so miles more, you hit Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Without doing any of the major trails there, you are looking at a few weeks of messing around.
So to sum it up just in West Texas along a line about 200 miles long from the Panther Junction Visitor Center in Big Bend to the Pine Springs Visitor Center in the Guadalupe Mountains you could spend months enjoying some of the most spectacular country and adventures in the USA. Think of what else is waiting in the rest of the country. Think Mt. Rainer, Death Valley, Smoky Mountains, Mt. Rushmore, Hoover Dam and Historic Parks like Vicksburg. All these have given me excitement in person and need more time to attempt to enjoy them fully.
Wow my head is going nuts with excitement for when rolling time gets here Jan. 19, 2010 at the latest. This will be a great year for trying to have tooooo much fun. TheOFM
