Beautiful sunshine and cool breeze
Most of the day was spent piddling on this and that but nothing. After lunch, a trip to the Post Office was accomplished along with a run to Wal-Mart for four minor but needed items. On the way home, the library had parking spaces at it so I stopped.
(The rest of this post is a good example how there are interesting things all around us when we take time to notice them. In my previous life the rest of this blog entry would have been one short sentence"I went to the library". Now things are a lot better I think. You get to choose which is better for you.)
The very nice folks in the library got me a card in short order. When I requested to take some photos of the building the response was a resounding “Certainly”.
The building used to be a court house before being turned into the public library. The hardware on a lot of the building is of the older ornate style. The whole building seems more like a well preserved museum than a library. Here is a picture of the back door where I entered.
The door knob and door plate were typical of the hardware throughout the building. Even the restroom was still with antique fixtures. You can see how ornate the door handles were in this picture.
Upon entry into the foyer, you are surrounded with grandeur. The hanging lighting fixtures are beautiful and the cabinets are of a time long gone in public buildings. It is evident when examining the wood work that it has had years of hand rubbing to get it to the luster it has now.
The children’s section is down stairs and the rest of the books are up stairs. Even the stairs are very nice. The old woodwork is evident again in the stairs shown here.
At the top of the stairs is another foyer with a wall hanging picturing early Fredericksburg. Again the hardware is old and beautiful, just like me.
This is the entry into the adults area of the library. The shelves appear to be a little newer than the rest of the building, but far from recent. It is not as extensive a library as I have been used too as far as books are concerned. However it is still very good. The cabinet in the center of the picture is an honest to goodness card catalog file with actual cardboard cards. I have not seen one of them in years and years. WOW.
When I left the building, I was greeted by these fragrant blooms promising that Spring is soon to arrive. They were as gorgeous as they were fragrant. Come on Spring.
This evening old friend Dick, the fire fool, from Washington called to chat for a while. They are doing well up there in the cold, but had sunshine today. He is a golf nut deluxe, well maybe not deluxe but a fool and a nut anyway. We used to stick it to each other unmercifully on the golf course. One day a fellow that did not know us, started backing away expecting us to get into a fight. That was a funny day.
We had a lot of good times up there while trying to have tooooo much fun. TheOFM.
